We all have that voice in our head.
And sometimes it's not little.
Some days it's a big elephant sized critic.
And we aren't sure how to deal with it.
Like the elephant in the room, we aren't sure how to face it.
But let's take a step back.
That voice of criticism didn't get HUGE one day, all on its own.
We made it grow.
Our past experiences, failures, and struggles molded in our minds how we talk to our self.
We just keep feeding the elephant.
In this article I'm going to teach you how to attack those limiting beliefs by asking the right questions.
My elephant was confidence.
I constantly said to myself as a speaker, author, and trainer,
"I don't have six pack abs and I'm not my fittest. I'm still on my journey. I don't look the part."
" I really said, Ummm and you know", a lot during that call. That made me sound stupid."
"Why did I sign up to lead this presentation, no one wants to learn from me. I'm a nobody."
But after I had my son, I knew if I wanted to be a confident role model to him, I needed to start chopping down that elephant.
I had to start taking it out at the ankles until it crumbled to the ground.
I had to go kung fu karate style crazy on my inside voice.
And I had to start chopping and kicking at it from multiple strike zones.
1. Posture- Am I standing tall, shoulders back, fully engaged?
2. Breath- Is my mind and my body working together? Am I breathing deeply?
3. Style- Does my style match my creativity? Did I put in the effort to show the world me best?
4. Gut Check- I started to pause and change that voice in my head.
Instead of saying to myself,
"I don't know how this is going to go. I'm pretty nervous. I hope I don't blow it."
I started to say,
"Am I prepared for this?"
"Did I do the work and place myself in the best position to succeed?"
"Will I grow from this experience regardless of the outcome?"
When we start planning ahead and get excited, pretty soon we become that elephant.
